The vision for Kannapolis 2.0 is to serve as a signpost, a central spot for information, a bibliography. It has achieved that vision, but it can be better, a lot better. All it takes is time and a little skill.

Core Lab dome artist ready to start mural

Work has begun on the largest painted dome in the state and possibly in the Southeast.

Crews spent two days erecting special scaffolding inside the Core Laboratory Building at the N.C. Research Campus that will hold artist Brenda Mauney Councill 150 feet in the air as she paints fruits and vegetables on the ceiling.

UNCG Opens Office in Kannapolis

UNCG has opened an office in Kannapolis, home of the nascent North Carolina Research Campus.

The office in Cannon Village will serve as temporary headquarters for UNCG’s Center for Research Excellence in Bioactive Food Components until permanent labs and offices are finished.

Meanwhile, UNCG has begun interviewing candidates for a permanent center director, who will be one of the center’s two senior research professors, said Dr. Debbie Kipp, chair of UNCG’s Department of Nutrition and the center’s interim director. The university has hired an office manager, Kelly Elliott, who will work full time in Kannapolis starting in January.

Golden Gait sets up shop in Kannapolis

A cargo-trailer manufacturer has started production in Kannapolis and plans to grow to 100 employees by the end of 2010.

Golden Gait Trailers moved from Mecklenburg County to N.C. Highway 73 at Interstate 85, where it has gained greater access to the motorsports teams that are among its primary customers.

Forty-six is a reasonably magic pair of digits -- the atomic number of palladium, the total number of books in the Catholic Old Testament, the number of peaks in the Adirondacks (leading to the nickname of "forty-sixers" for folks who've scaled them all).

Here, though, as the name of a new restaurant in Kannapolis owned by David Murdock, Forty Six refers to the number of chromosomes in the human body. And reasonable magic -- with a little science, spirituality and sports thrown in -- it is.
